Ex-Isla del Alacrán
La Península
del Alacrán es una antigua isla que se unió artificialmente con un
camino junto con las obras de construcción del Puerto de Arica, en los
años sesentas, sin embargo los ariqueños aún se refieren
familiarmente a ella como "la isla".
Posee las
ruinas de un antiguo fuerte colonial que defendía a la ciudad de los
ataques por mar de los piratas, Arica fue asolada varias veces por
piratas famosos y se cree que podría ser uno de los lugares donde
Francis Drake enterró parte de las riquezas capturadas en sus
correrías
Aunque no posee
playas habilitadas para el baño tiene estupendos lugares para mirar las
aves y el Océano Pacífico, para tomar el sol y además tiene el mejor
sitio para practicar surf en la ciudad, donde se forma la ola "El
Gringo"
Por las noches
es uno de los lugares de reunión favoritos de los ariqueños de todas
las edades.
The
Alacrán Peninsula, was formerly an island and then, in the sixties
when the port of Arica was built it got connected to the
continent, however ariqueños still refer to it as "La Isla"
It has ruins of an ancient colonial fortress used to defend the city
from pirate attacks. Arica suffered many infamous pirates raids in the
past and it is believed to be one of the places where the lost treasure
of Sir Francis Drake is still hidden.
El Alacrán is not suitable for swimming but it is a great natural
spot for bird watching, resting and sunbathing. It is the best surfing
place for the city with a wave called "el gringo".
By night it is a meeting place for ariqueños of all ages, who
go there to chat and share a drink in a sort of "Plaza de Armas".
